COEL Hosts CoCoA Undergraduate Workshop at Samcheok

On 22 January 2026, Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL) successfully hosted a dedicated workshop for CoCoA, undergraduate coastal study club under COEL, held a workshop in Samcheok SOL Beach. This workshop as held as a creative platform for the students to shape the next generation of coastal engineering professionals. This is a time where the students showcase their own research project based on what they learned in CoCoA, mainly focused on OpenDrift for advanced ocean trajectory modeling and particle tracking., Fusion360 for precision 3D modeling and engineering design, and AI-based YOLO for implementing advanced object detection algorithms within coastal environments. This event was supervised by Prof. Sungwon Shin, and also attended by Kangwon National University Prof. Taemin Ha, and Geosystem Research Dr. Yoo Hojun which help giving helpful feedbacks and insights.

CoastLab 2026 Conference Participation (@India, February 2026)


Professor Sungwon Shin and Postdoctoral Researcher Hai Van Dang from the Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL) participated in the 10th Conference on Physical Modelling in Coastal Engineering and Science (CoastLab 2026) held in Chennai, India from February 23 to 27, 2026.

CoastLab is an international conference focusing on advances in physical modelling in coastal engineering and science. The event brings together researchers and practitioners from around the world to share the latest developments in experimental techniques, laboratory studies, and applications related to coastal processes and infrastructure.

During the conference, members of our team presented their recent research on:

🌊 Simulation on Wave Attenuation through Rhizopora Mangrove Forest: Prototype-scale Physica; and CFD Numerical Modeling

The conference provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas with international researchers and to discuss recent advancements in coastal and ocean engineering research.

COEL Christmas Party 2025

On 22 December 2025, COEL held a Christmas Party to celebrate the end of year and strengthen the bonding between laboratory members. The event brought together COEL professor, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students together for an evening of celebration. The event began with dinner together as a year-end celebration. After the dinner, interactive games and quiz session is held, creating lively and enjoyable atmosphere. Following the games, singing contest is held. COEL members showcased their talents in singing, creating cheerful and entertaining session. The event concluded with a gift exchange session, symbolizing appreciation, gratitude, and goodwill among laboratory members.

Workshop and Field Trip at University of New South Wales (UNSW)

In November 2025, the Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL) of Hanyang University ERICA, together with the Geosystem Research Team, conducted an academic visit to the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, as part of an international knowledge-exchange program with the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

This visit comprised an academic workshop, campus and laboratory tour, and coastal field trip. This visitation aimed to strengthen collaboration and sharing recent advances and knowledge in coastal and ocean engineering research. The program was hosted and led by Associate Professor Mitchell Harley (UNSW), a leading expert in coastal processes and shoreline dynamics.

Prof. Shin introduced the Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL) of Hanyang University ERICA through his presentation. He discussed the laboratory's ongoing projects focused on coastal engineering. COEL's recent studies include nature-based solutions for coastal protection, addressing coastal erosion, flooding, and hazards.

During the international workshop in Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) on 10-12 November 2025, the participants went on a field trip to see mangrove forests in Xuan Thuy National Park.

The workshop participants also visit a coastal area in Doson area to see the real life implementation of hybrid green and gray structure.

On 12 November 2025, Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) welcomes Hanyang University ERICA, Kangwon National University, Geosystem Research, Kumamoto University in an international academic workshop Hải Phòng, Vietnam.

During the meeting, Prof. Sungwon Shin presented and introduced Hanyang University ERICA and Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL) to the panels. Hanyang University's ERICA Campus (Education Research Industry Cluster at Ansan) is a specialized branch of Hanyang University located in Ansan, South Korea, with QS World University Rankings 2026: #159 globally and 6th in South Korea. It is renowned for its strong focus on industry-academia cooperation and its unique "cluster" model, where education, research, and businesses collaborate closely. 

Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) is a national key university located in Hải Phòng, Vietnam, specializing in maritime and seaward economic fields. Founded in 1956, it is Vietnam's first university to offer education in maritime, shipbuilding, and sea-based economics.

COEL Workshop with Kumamoto University (@Hanyang University ERICA, November 2025)


Kumamoto University visited the Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory of Hanyang University ERICA. The workshop and meeting was held to share knowledge of each other's research. It is held to further strengthen the collaboration between both parties.

2025 Ocean Engineering CAE Competition: Grand Prize (Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award) (@Jeju, October 2025)

COELrythm (Sangyeop Lee, Gain Kim, Hoseung Lee, Mungi Choi, Yunsu Lee), supervised by Prof. Sungwon Shin, earned the Grand Prize (Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award) at the 2025 Ocean Engineering CAE Competition. The awarding was held at the 2025 Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Phoenix Island, Jeju-do, on 29-31 October 2025. 

The award recognizes the team’s innovative and excellent approach in developing digital twin-based tsunami damage prediction system using meteorological buoys.

In addition, one of the team members (Ga-in Kim) delivered a presentation on the team’s award-winning study titled “Development of a Digital Twin-Based Tsunami Damage Prediction System Using Meteorological Buoys,” during the 2025 Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers on the same day. The presentation received positive feedback from the evaluation panel for their potential in advancing tsunami damage prediction technology.
