During the international workshop in Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) on 10-12 November 2025, the participants went on a field trip to see mangrove forests in Xuan Thuy National Park.
The workshop participants also visit a coastal area in Doson area to see the real life implementation of hybrid green and gray structure.

On 12 November 2025, Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) welcomes Hanyang University ERICA, Kangwon National University, Geosystem Research, Kumamoto University in an international academic workshop Hải Phòng, Vietnam.
During the meeting, Prof. Sungwon Shin presented and introduced Hanyang University ERICA and Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL) to the panels. Hanyang University's ERICA Campus (Education Research Industry Cluster at Ansan) is a specialized branch of Hanyang University located in Ansan, South Korea, with QS World University Rankings 2026: #159 globally and 6th in South Korea. It is renowned for its strong focus on industry-academia cooperation and its unique "cluster" model, where education, research, and businesses collaborate closely.
Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) is a national key university located in Hải Phòng, Vietnam, specializing in maritime and seaward economic fields. Founded in 1956, it is Vietnam's first university to offer education in maritime, shipbuilding, and sea-based economics.
COEL Workshop with Kumamoto University (@Hanyang University ERICA, November 2025)
Kumamoto University visited the Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory of Hanyang University ERICA. The workshop and meeting was held to share knowledge of each other's research. It is held to further strengthen the collaboration between both parties.

COEL members attended the International Conference on Asian and Pacific Coasts held in Busan. 4-7 November 2025. Prof. Sungwon Shin, Post doctoral student Hai Van Dang, and undergraduate student Sangyeop Lee each presented their research in the conference.

2025 Ocean Engineering CAE Competition: Grand Prize (Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award) (@Jeju, October 2025)
Grand Prize Awarding
COELrythm (Sangyeop Lee, Gain Kim, Hoseung Lee, Mungi Choi, Yunsu Lee), supervised by Prof. Sungwon Shin, earned the Grand Prize (Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award) at the 2025 Ocean Engineering CAE Competition. The awarding was held at the 2025 Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Phoenix Island, Jeju-do, on 29-31 October 2025.
The award recognizes the team’s innovative and excellent approach in developing digital twin-based tsunami damage prediction system using meteorological buoys.
COELrythm Presentation
In addition, one of the team members (Ga-in Kim) delivered a presentation on the team’s award-winning study titled “Development of a Digital Twin-Based Tsunami Damage Prediction System Using Meteorological Buoys,” during the 2025 Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers on the same day. The presentation received positive feedback from the evaluation panel for their potential in advancing tsunami damage prediction technology.

At the 2025 Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers, COEL master’s student Joo Suchan received the Outstanding Student Paper Presentation Award for his presentation at the 2025 Spring Conference, which recognizes his excellent presentation.

He also presented his research paper at the 2025 Fall Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Phoenix Island, Jeju-do, on 29-31 October 2025. This presentation highlights his research on mangrove performance to reduce wave energy.

Prof. Sungwon Shin shares his team’s research findings at The 2025 Fall Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held at Jeju Island, 29-31 October 2025.
Prof. presents a research titled “Guidelines for New Wave Attenuation Technology Using Rigid Vegetation” at the conference. The study introduces innovative guidelines for utilizing rigid vegetation structures for wave attenuation and coastal resilience against regular, irregular, and tsunami waves.

COEL Post-doctoral researcher, Dr. Hai Van Dang, presented a research on "Laboratory Experiments on Storm-driven Debris Loading" at the 2025 KSOE Conference held in Jeju island. The study introduces the effect of debris on coastal structures.
49th ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group Meeting (@Brunei Darussalam, 2025)
Professor Sungwon Shin from Department of Marine Convergence Engineering, Hanyang University ERICA made a presentation for the 49th Asean Maritime Transport Working Group Meeting (MTWG) commenced in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, September 30th to October 2nd of 2025. Prof. Shin advocated about “Climate Change Response Safety Port Guidelines Project” commissioned by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).
According to Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam, this meeting was held as a platform to discuss key initiatives and projects aimed at advancing the maritime sector through collective cooperation across the region. The outcomes of the 49th MTWG are expected to reinforced ASEAN’s commitment to developing a sustainable, resilient, and seamlessly connected maritime domain.
4th International Workshop on Waves, Storm Surges, and Coastal Hazards (@Spain, September 2025)
COEL Professor Sungwon Shin & Post-doctoral researcher Dr. Hai Van Dang attended 4th International Workshop on Waves, Storm Surges, and Coastal Hazards. Incorporating the 18th International Waves Workshop, the 4th International Workshop on Waves, Storm Surges and Coastal Hazards was hosted by the University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain, 22-26 September 2025.
The workshop was held to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information related to wind, wave, and storm surge hindcasting and forecasting including fully-integrated coastal warning systems, and description of present and future states of the climate. It was also held to promote cross-cutting, multi-disciplinary, scientific/engineering collaboration in the field of coastal risk and resiliency, including long term planning, mitigation, impact-based forecasting and the role of natural protection.
Dr. Hai Van Dang presented his research “Experimental and CFD Numerical Studies of Wave Attenuation Through Mangrove Forest of Moderate Crossshore Width” on the Session Q (Coral Reefs and Mangroves)…
