At the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society Annual Meeting 2026 (AOGS2026), members of the Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL), Hanyang University ERICA, presented their latest research in the Ocean Sciences (OS).

The Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL), Hanyang University ERICA, was pleased to participate in the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society Annual Meeting 2026 (AOGS2026), held in Fukuoka, Japan, from 2–7 August 2026.

Together with Professor Sungwon Shin, COEL members attended the conference and had the opportunity to present our research, exchange ideas with researchers from around the world, and engage in meaningful discussions on coastal and ocean sciences.

AOGS2026 was a valuable opportunity to gain new perspectives, strengthen international connections, and explore potential collaborations within the science community.

We are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to bringing these experiences and insights back to COEL 🌊

The Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL) of Hanyang University is pleased to welcome our new internship student from France, Sacha Palazy, who joins us for a two-month research term (July-August 2026).

During his time at our laboratory, Sacha will collaborate with our research team on advanced projects within coastal engineering and tsunami studies, contributing fresh perspectives to our ongoing initiatives.

International academic exchanges play a vital role in broadening our research scope and fostering global scientific collaboration. We look forward to a productive two months ahead!

COEL was honored to participate in the 2026 Invited Workshop for Port Experts on Safe Ports in Response to Climate Change, held in Seoul from July 1 to 3, 2026.

Organized under the ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group (MTWG) framework, the event was hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea and the Korea Cooperative Supporting Center for Overseas Port Development (KCSC) to foster international collaboration on safeguarding critical maritime infrastructure.

Prof. Sungwon Shin was invited to deliver a key lecture titled "Nature-Based Solutions and Hybrid Approaches for Climate-Resilient Port Design."

During the session, Prof. Shin shared our lab’s latest research on integrating eco-friendly, nature-based infrastructure with traditional coastal engineering. He highlighted how hybrid approaches can effectively absorb wave energy, adapt to rising sea levels, and provide robust, long-term protection for modern port facilities.

Congratulations to our Master's student, Suchan Joo­, for being selected to receive the 2026 ICCE Outstanding Student Abstract Award at the 39th International Conference on Coastal Engineering in Galveston, Texas, ranking among the top 3% of over 750 submitted abstracts.

His abstract, "Laboratory Study on Scale Effects in Mangrove-Induced Wave Attenuation," was recognized at the plenary session on May 18, 2026.

We are pleased to share that a new paper by Dr. Hai Van Dang, Assoc. Prof. Tori Tomiczek , Prof. Sungwon Shin, Prof. Daniel Cox , Assoc. Prof. Pedro Lomonaco Tonda has been published in Ocean Engineering:

"OpenFOAM-based Numerical Modeling on Wave Transformation and Attenuation in Idealized Prototype-Scale Mangrove Forest: Regular and Random Waves"

Using a high-resolution CFD model validated against prototype-scale experiments, this study investigates how wave parameters (water depth, relative wave height, wave steepness) and mangrove characteristics (stem density) affect wave attenuation in idealized Rhizophora forests. The study also proposes empirical equations and an ANN model that identifies relative wave height, relative forest width, and mangrove density as the primary factors, accounting for 70% of wave attenuation.

The findings advance nature-based coastal protection strategies and provide engineering guidance for incorporating mangrove forests into resilient shoreline design.

🌊 Myeongjin Lee: Long-Period Wave and Tsunami Detection Techniques Using IMU and RTK-GPS Sensors

How do we keep coastal homes safe from the raw power of the ocean? In this study published in Ocean Engineering (2024), Dr. Hai Van Dang and Prof. Sungwon Shin (along with collaborators Assoc. Prof. Hyoungsu Park, Prof. Taemin Ha, and Prof. Daniel T. Cox) investigated the efficacy of coastal defense structures in safeguarding buildings against tsunami-like overland flows.

Using olaFlow solver in OpenFOAM, the team built a digital "virtual lab" to see exactly how Seawalls (SW) and Submerged Breakwaters (SB) stand up against massive, tsunami-like surges.

What did they find?

🌊 The Shield Effect: Both Seawalls and Submerged Breakwaters significantly reduce the flow depth and velocity, effectively shielding the first row of buildings in an array.

🌊 Pressure Reduction: The study provides quantitative data on how these structures decrease peak pressures on building surfaces, with the seawall showing high effectiveness in reducing impulsive impact loads.
