COEL Hosts CoCoA Undergraduate Workshop at Samcheok
On 22 January 2026, Coastal and Ocean Engineering Laboratory (COEL) successfully hosted a dedicated workshop for CoCoA, undergraduate coastal study club under COEL, held a workshop in Samcheok SOL Beach. This workshop as held as a creative platform for the students to shape the next generation of coastal engineering professionals. This is a time where the students showcase their own research project based on what they learned in CoCoA, mainly focused on OpenDrift for advanced ocean trajectory modeling and particle tracking., Fusion360 for precision 3D modeling and engineering design, and AI-based YOLO for implementing advanced object detection algorithms within coastal environments. This event was supervised by Prof. Sungwon Shin, and also attended by Kangwon National University Prof. Taemin Ha, and Geosystem Research Dr. Yoo Hojun which help giving helpful feedbacks and insights.
The core of the workshop featured six talented undergraduate students showcasing their research project. After that, the graduate students of COEL also presented their work projects. This event provided them with the opportunity to showcase their independent research based on the knowledge throughout CoCoA study club. COEL lab members (Sangyeop Lee, Myungjin Lee, and Hoseung Lee) assisted the undergraduates from the technical research to presentation visualization and professionalism.
Following the undergraduates presentation section, COEL’s members also presented their current research projects. Post-doctoral researcher Dr. Hai Van Dang gave insight to the students about introduction to coastal-related modelling.
The primary mission of the workshop was to nurture young talent and equip them with the practical skills needed in modern coastal engineering. By providing a platform for these students to engage with complex software and present their findings, COEL continues to build a collaborative academic environment.
